Porsche 960 supercar comes into focus

The rumor mill is in action again, as new details emerge around the upcoming super automobile by Porsche, that will slot between 911 GT2 RS and 918 Spyder.

According to CAR, Porsche has scrapped plans for development of 2015 model from the existing vehicles. Instead, the supercar – reportedly codenamed the 960 – is slated to ride on a bespoke mid-engine Mimo platform aka (MSB-M) which hasn’t been green-lighted as of yet. It is not much known about the architecture, but the messages will be very adaptable and available in variety of configurations.

Except of that, the magazine says power could be provided from b-turbo 3.8-liter boxer engine with power of 600 h.p. (447 kW/608 PS) and 550 lb-ft (745 Nm) of torque.

It is needless to say that we are taking everything with a grain of salt but CEO Matthias Mueller has previously said that the company needs a Ferrari rival that is priced between 250.000 € and 400.000 €.

2017 Porsche 960: A 600-plus-hp, Mid-Engined Bridge Between the 911 and 918

WHAT IT IS: A mid-engined supercar positioned between the 911 Turbo megacar and the 918 hybrid hypercar. The 960 conceptually and stylistically resembles a slightly bigger and far more powerful Cayman, but with an extra zero added to the price.

porsche 960 front view

WHY IT MATTERS: Porsche is weak in the world of supercars. The 911 Turbo and GT3, while extremely capable, are limited by their theoretically inferior rear-engine design (hey, don’t shoot the messenger). And the 918, which fixes that problem, may put off purists—at least, those not scared off?by an expected price tag close to $850,000—with its Mr. Fusion hybrid powertrain.

PLATFORM: The aluminum-and-composite-intensive 960 will be based on Porsche’s new, modular sport architecture (Modularer Sportbaukasten), which can be tailored for mid- or rear-engine applications.

POWERTRAIN: The hamster running in the wheel will most likely be a horizontally opposed eight-cylinder engine, although an aggressively boosted flat-six is not out of the question. Power will be well north of 600 horses, and all-wheel drive should be standard.

COMPETITION: Mid-engined supercars such as the Audi R8, Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Gallardo, and McLaren 12C.

WHAT MIGHT GO WRONG: A Porsche is tagged, perhaps unfairly, as a lawyer’s car—very sporty but also somewhat sensible everyday wheels. Can the brand still breathe the thin air where exotics live? This car could be an expensive way to learn that it can’t, and it also may diminish the 918’s appeal.

ESTIMATED ARRIVAL AND PRICE: Should show by 2017, at a price well above $200,000.

Porsche 960 expected in 2017

It has been talk for a long time of the arrival of a Porsche model, destinated to face the Ferrari 458 Italia, the McLaren MP4-12 C , a model situated between the exclusive Porsche 918 Spyder and the mythical but terrestrial Porsche 911 .A model with mid-rear engine of which are known more details.

It is still in the rumor stage but our German manufacturer would be building a 4-door coupe named Porsche 960. It would be a sedan above the Panamera designed to counter some Ferrari models.

The Panamera knows fabulous results and a new sedan would be seeing the day in the workshops of the manufacturer. Planned for 2015, this model is equipped with the traditional Flat-6 and central bi-turbo engine propulsion platform MSB-M VW Group producing at least 600 horsepower. This secret model would fit between the 911 and the 918 Spyder and would internal code name “Fefi” for Ferrari Fighter, no less! It’s expected  more a GT than a “simple” sedan to compete with the history of FF and the  F12 Berlinetta Italian manufacturer. The final name could be Porsche 961.

Porsche announced without subterfuge that it wants a new super sport car in its gamma, capable to face Ferrari and Lamborghini ,models which stay way of the 911 (and they are more exclusives because although the 911 GT2 RS is very fast, remains a 911) and they’re not at the level of 918 Spyder.

porsche 960 ow

First of all, it was going to use the  918 as starting point for the future sport car in the German house, but now it seems that the plans have change. There is no engine V8 or carbon fiber structure. In Volkswagen want that the future sport cars in tint Middle High Group(Audi R8 ,Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 960) use the same platform, so this failed the expectations of Porsche to fabricate their car with their own structure.

The new platform of the group is named Mimo(or MSB-M) and from the little known of it is that it should be capable to adopt itself to a lot of new configurations. Different types of bodyworks, materials, tractions (both whole and rear) and wide variety of engines.

The unique platform 960 is dropped, and the V8 engine as well. Now it seems that a simpler (and more Porsche) bi-turbo 3.8-liter boxer to be around 600 hp will be responsible for encouraging the drive from the center position.

porsche 960 back view

There is a lot of time to the launch date in 2015 , but little by little the new sport car in the high-gamma of Porsche will be profiled .Its price it unknown, but it should be around 250.000.

First labeled the 960, then the 961, and now back to being called the 960, it is Porsche’s take on a supercar specifically aimed at Ferrari – Porsche’s internal moniker for it is “FeFi,” which stands for “Ferrari Fighter.” Because it is expected to cost as much as the top-tier V12 Ferrari, Porsche wants the engine solution to justify the price tag. That means, according to the  author Georg Kacher, a 3.9-liter, quad-turbo flat-eight engine with 650 horsepower.

Last summer, the engine was mooted to be a twin-turbo flat six. A few months later, the rumor was that it would use the 4.6-liter V8 from the 918 and have about 570 horsepower. This new mid-engine configuration would be quite the leap, giving the 960 more power than the 918 Spyder  and 911 GT2 RS, and utilize other tech features like four adjustable camshafts and “a complex multistage intake manifold.” In this scenario, power would be run through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive.

There is some uncertainty about the future sport of Porsche beyond of the 918 Spyder . It has been talked a lot of a compact sport, a new Porsche resurrecting the spirit of Porsche 356 and 550, a Porsche halfway to the 918 and 911 ,and it seems that for the ultimate model more light could be shed.

According to Automobile Magazine this Porsche , the Porsche 960 as it seems  to be known as ,would be driven by a boxer block, but a block 8-cylinder boxer. This engine of 3.9 l, will give power of 650 hp, getting such a number using the supercharger through nothing more or less than four turbos also for transmission using a 7 ratios change  PDK…

From the British media is known that the body is made of aluminum, accompanied by a good presence of carbon fiber, magnesium and titanium, reaching a weight of about 1300kg with features that will let it have acceleration from 0 to 100km/h in about 2.5 seconds. Its production won’t be limited and is expected about 3.000 to 4000 units per year, beginning their marketing in 2016.The project looks good if the magazine is right.650 hp,the weight content…although some persons prefer the the return of a compact sports concept of resurrection the Porsche 356 and 550.

Porsche 960 specifications

Some specifications :

Featuring four turbochargers, two intercoolers, four adjustable camshafts, a complex multistage intake manifold, and dual-stage exhaust, the 3.9-liter engine is expected to deliver 650 hp and shoot the machine from a standstill to 100 km/h in an estimated 2.5 seconds.

With a mid engine design that’s very low mounted and connecting a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Porsche 960 relies on an aluminum-intensive architecture supported by steel, carbon fiber, magnesium, titanium, and other composite elements to keep weight to about 3000 pounds.

All-wheel drive made the cut and adds close to 200 pounds but earns its keep by getting the power to the ground — 0 to 62 mph allegedly takes only 2.5 seconds.

Some new info from Georg Kacher :

– 3,9l flat-8, quad turbo, 650hp

– AWD, 7-speed PDK

– 1400kg

– 0-100 km/h ~ 2,5s

– 250 000+ EUR

– reveal in 2016

Pretty impressive, if true. No longer a car for purists, but it will be a monster. However, by that time there will already be a 458 successor (most likely turbocharged V8 as well) and MP4-12C in its 5th version already. The rumoured price is on a high side as well, in comparison with current prices in this segment.

Mid-engined, 4wd, eight-cylinder boxer engines: Georg Kacher reveals how the new 960 slots in above

Project 960 sits neatly between the forthcoming 580bhp 991 Turbo S and the 918 Spyder, complete with 583 V8-supplied bhp and 240 electric ponies.

It’s the first time Porsche has dabbled in this supercar sector: previously it’s stuck with racier 911s or proper top-end exotica such as the 959 and Carrera GT. And there are further reasons why we should all start salivating. Such as its eight-cylinder boxer engine. Or its four-wheel drivetrain and seven-speed PDK twin-clutch transmission. Not to mention its 2.5sec dash from 0-60mph.

It’s a brave move by Porsche, plugging a gap in its range which has let traditional supercar makers, and the likes of Bentley, make hay in the ?200k-plus marketplace. Not for much longer.

Porsche 960 engine

Porsche favours a new flat-eight engine for the Porsche 960 . A development of the trademark six-cylinder boxer, the quad-turbo 3.9 is mounted low down in the spaceframe chassis and features a central take-off which connects to a seven-speed PDK ‘box. CAR understands that VW boss Ferdinand Piech is already running a stealth Cayman fitted with a 4.0-litre B8 prototype. This engine supersedes earlier plans for a 4.8 V8 or 911-related flat six.

Porsche’s FeFi relies on an aluminium-intensive platform supported by steel, carbon fibre, magnesium, titanium and other composite elements. To ensure light-footed handling and supercar performance, the target weight is in the area of 1400kg. Light, compact and slippery, the 960 will accelerate to 60mph in about 2.5sec.

To control the flat – eight 650bhp, the porsche 960 will be four-wheel drive. This adds around 80kg to the kerbweight and is necessary to cope with the instant torque from the quad turbos. Our sources predict we may see a pared-back rear-wheel-drive GT edition later. Porsche’s own mannettino will let drivers flick from mild to wild.

See the new Porsche 960 in the metal in late 2016 with production at the Zuffenhausen parent plant slated to begin in February 2017. This is no limited-edition: estimates run at 3000 to 4000 cars a year over a full lifecycle of six years. The new flagship will most likely be priced above ?250,000; that’s slap bang in Ferrari 458 and McLaren 12C territory.
